An exploration of R for psychologists: from data handling to multilevel modelling (XPLR01)

This five-day course workshop aims to provide a hands-on introduction to the statistical software package R, with the aim of enabling interested researchers to transition to using R instead of existing software packages (such as SPSS).
R is a very powerful tool that allows you to perform almost any analysis imaginable, easily grapple with the messiest data, and produce beautiful plots and reports. Because using R involves coding (there is no point-and-click interface), it can take some effort to learn. However, this initial investment will pay constant dividends, as you will be able to meet any future analytic or data-cleaning challenges.
Over the course of five days, we’ll use real datasets from psychology to master data cleaning, manipulation, and plotting within R, using the tidyverse, a set of powerful and easy-to-use packages. We’ll then move on to cover how to perform common analyses (e.g. t-tests, regressions, anova, moderation), as well as covering a variety of multilevel models (longitudinal, nested groups, dyadic and round-robin data). Datasets will be provided for these purposes but you’ll also be welcome to bring your own.
A small amount of familiarity with R (loading the software, reading in data, installing packages) will be required before the course starts. Students with no prior experience with R should complete this short DataCamp course, and the Setup instructions listed here, in order to fulfil this pre-requisite.
Research postgraduates, practicing academics, and industry researchers who want to become confident users of the R software package.

Short lectures and demonstrations will be interspersed with frequent exercises and time to integrate knowledge by using it practically. Data will be provided, but students are encouraged to bring their own datasets to explore new skills in these interludes as they develop.
Assumed quantitative knowledge
A basic understanding of the statistical concepts behind t-tests and regression. The general linear model as it relates to psychological analyses and multilevel models will be reviewed thoroughly.
Assumed computer background
Some familiarity with R. (see course description).
Equipment and software requirements
A laptop/personal computer with a working version of R or RStudio. R and RStudio are supported by both PC and MAC and can be downloaded for free by following these links.
A list of R packages to install will be sent before the course is due to commence. It is essential that you have a working copy of Rstudio installed with all packaged also installed before the course commences (this is the most frequent cause of delays and difficulties on the first day).
